I am a huge fan of Pat Conroy’s books. I just saw a commercial for a new movie based on his book The Water Is Wide that will be on CBS on January 29th. This book was previously made into a movie titled Conrack which starred Jon Voight. This new movie is one of the Hallmark Presents things. I am planning on recording it. Chances are that since it is done by Hallmark, it will be over the top sappy, but who knows. I don’t reconize any of the actors names except for Frank Langella who will be playing the school superintendent.
The Water Is Wide is autobiograpical, and follows Pat Conroy’s experiences teaching poor black children on a remote island in South Carolina. Conroy battles with issues such as segregation, and racism. It is a good book, and the writing shows glimmers of the novels will come later.

I have started seeing commercials with little clips, but not enough to tell if the movie will be any good.

In the book and movie Pat Conroy teaches on Yamacraw Island. The real life island he taught on was Daufuskie Island.
Not sure about Beaumont County.

Loved the movie. I’m just now figuring out that the Jon Voight movie was “Conrack”. I think it was based on the same story.

We recorded this movie the night it was on the Movie of the Week but due to a sports event that ran longer we missed the ending and we are very much wanting to purchase The Water Is Wide. Please tell me where it is available for sale.

I don’t think it is for sale at the moment. It might come out on DVD at some point in the future. It will probably be replayed at some point.
Personally, I was disappointed. You would be better off getting the original movie made from the book. That movie was titled Conrack and satrred Jon Voight.
