I have gotten a handful of search engine hits asking how many zeros (0’s) are in the number one million. There are six zeros “1,000,000” in one million.

Now for billion and trillion, the definitions are different in America, and Britain.

In America one billion has nine zeros “1,000,000,000”, and one trillion has twelve zeroes “1,000,000,000,000”.

In Britain billion means twice as many zeros as one million or 12 zeros “1,000,000,000,000”. And trillion means three times as many zeros as one million of 18 zeros “1,000,000,000,000,000,000”.

I am assuming these are students (hopefully young ones) doing homework. Study hard kids!

If you want some REALLY BIG numbers try a GOOGOL (pronounced google). A googol is a 1 followed by 100 zeros. And a GOOGOLPLEX is 10 to the power of a GOOGOL or a 1 followed by a googol of zeros. I have read that if a googolplex were written out on a piece of paper that it wouldn’t fit in the known universe.

hey,

thanx for the web site its grate it helped me alot with my first lot of Home work in yr 8.

thanx heaps, keep up the gr8 web site.

Dear Sir / Madam,

Kindly advice how many zeros in 1 billion in Chinese situation?

Thanks & Regards,

Wes

Comment by Wesley Goh — February 15, 2006 @ 10:43 pm

China uses a completely different number system where digits are in groups of four, instead of groups of three (ie one million = 1,000,000). I don’t know if they have equivalent terms of billion or trillion.

If the Three Gorges Dam in China holds 21811678087.50 US Tons of water, what do I call this number? (Billion? Trillion?)

Relations of Millions and billions eng and chinese

1,000,000 = 1 million

1,000,000,000 = 1 billion

10,000 = 10 thousand = 1è¬

therefore

1,000,000 = 1 million = 100è¬

1,000,000,000 = 1 billion = 10å„„

(1å„„ = 100,000,000 = 100 million)

so the answer to sweet pea’s question is

21,811,678,087.50 US Tons of water

21.8 billion tons of water

(218億噸水)
