I sold off my shares of Michael’s (MIK) and PetsMart (PETM) and freed up $1816. I am starting to move away from individual stocks towards index funds. (I have not historically had a lot of luck in picking stocks) I put the procedes into more shares IYR which is a REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) index fund. I like REITs because that pay nice dividends. REITs are a way to invest in Real Estate. For instance a particular REIT might own and manage shopping malls. They make money from rents and leases and such. REITs must by law pass at least 90% of their profits back to the shareholders, to avoid paying corporate taxes. I have a bunch of IYR in my Roth IRA so I will never have to pay taxes on those dividends there. In my regular account I will have to pay taxes on them I guess.
