1 comments about The Theory of Unemployment Reconsidered (Yrjo Jahnsson Lectures).
- Eight years after the appearance of Professor Malinvaud's The Theory of Unemployment Reconsidered, its fundamental message still stands: namely, that the microeconomic theory of fixed-price general equilibrium has direct significance for the macroeconomic theory of involuntary unemployment.
Of the two theories advanced for explaining the origin of massive involuntary unemployment, the "classical" one claims that wage rates are too high for firms to find it profitable to recruit all the available labour force, while the "Keynesian" one finds that a too low effective demand for goods explains why an excess supply of labour prevails. Theoretical explorations into the general equilibrium of an economy with sticky prices and rationing open possibilities for a new understanding of the respective domains of validity of these two theories.
The book first discusses the foundations of the new approach, then proceeds to a detailed study of the various impacts of short-term poicies. Turning to medium-term evolutions, the author enquires why Keynesian unemployment is more frequent than classical unemployment, but points to circumstanses that make the present situation in the Western World somewhat somewhat akin to classical unemployment.
In this revised and expanded edition of his text, Professor Malinvaud includes a new preface and index, and connects the analyses of the book with recently published research work.

1 comments about Finding Work Without Losing Heart: Bouncing Back from Mid-Career Job Loss.
- This book speaks directly to the 3 real impediments so many dedicated professionals face when they lose their job -- depression/self-recrimination, bitterness and loss of perspective.
The book also gives practical job search tips, especially (but not limited to) for higher level professionals. What Color is Your Parachute is an outstanding guide to job hunting but not much help until a job-seeker gets past the problems above. Buy both books.

1 comments about A Mouthful of Rivets: Women at Work in World War II (Jossey Bass Social and Behavioral Science Series).
- The authors of this book took an interesting approach to writing this historical book. It is written as an oral narrative of the women who lived and worked during World War II. Each chapter begins with some comments and clarifications from the authors describing a following short conversation from the women that they talked to in researching the book. These narratives were helpful with understanding what the women were talking about. "A Mouthful of Rivets" takes the reader from the beginning of World War II, until after the war ended and the women were faced with unemployment. The trials and tribulations each woman and her family faced were beautifully reconstructed in their own words. We learn what is was like for these young, courageous women to bravely enter a predominantely male work force; and we watch them suffer the humiliation of having to step aside from their jobs to go back to the kitchen once the soldiers returned from war. It was neat to read the stories that they had to tell. They were very compelling and put life in a different perspective from the way we live today. The reason that I only gave this book 3 stars was because it was a bit difficult for me to read. It took me awhile to muddle through the unfamiliar writing styles of these two authors because it doesn't read like a novel at all. Just as I was really getting into the story a woman was telling, the chapter was through and I was plunged into a different topic altogether. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in this period of time, but it does take some patience to adjust to this form of writing.

4 comments about Discrimination, Harassment, and the Failure of Diversity Training: What to Do Now.
- I was really disappointed in this book -- especially considering the price and the lack of credible reseach within the book. Instead of exploring the topic fully and providing a solid grounding for the recommendations, chapters are wasted discussing specific tm tools of the authors/consultants. The content of this book has been done before -- usually in shorter magazine articles and often more thoroughly.
- The first half of the book was pretty good and pretty accurate. It describes what I have always felt - that most businesses do a very poor job at attempting to tack diversity. While it does have some good tips, the last half of the book is more of a solicitation for their "tool."
- This book is a refreshing reality check for what diversity training is doing to American corporate pool of employees. We are poisoning our own human resources through the divisiveness brought about with this absurd philosophy. Very well researched with survey results of over 500 corporate executives, this is the first diversity book I've read with any sources whatsoever. They had tremendous courage to publish it in the midst of extreme political correctness. For once, intellectual honesty and rationalism takes a stand. This book should be required reading for every CEO who has mandated diversity training in their company.
- The first half of this book is very well-researched and copiously footnoted. It demonstrates the basic weaknesses of all diversity training programs.
The entire first half of the book can be summed up in a single sentence from page 60, "Studies show that at least 85 percent of those people fired from their jobs are dismissed because of interpersonal limitations, a statistic that holds true at all organizational levels. It is their inability to get along with others - coworkers, bosses, subordinates or customers - that is the cause of their troubles, not poor technical skills."
Indeed, given the numerous instances of various million-dollar "discrimination" suits described in the book, any reflective reader will realize that every single instance of harm was a harm that resulted from someone, somewhere, acting like a boor.
In short, we don't need diversity training, we need better manners.
Manners are, of course, a two-way street. The first part of good manners means you try in every instance not to inflict unnecessary harm. However, given the way different lives are led, it is certain that a remark intended to be innocent may inadvertently serve as a match to fuel some lingering hurt.
So the second part of good manners is equally important - don't take unnecessary offense. It used to be the hallmark of good breeding that a man or woman ignore slights or insults given, refuse to become entangled in them, refuse to play the victim. In America as in the rest of the world, that tradition has been largely destroyed.
Having good manners, refusing to give or take unnecessary offense, refusing to give scandal or to take scandal - that is really all there is to effective "diversity" training. Everything else is garbage.
The authors do spend the last half of the book discussing their special techniques, but it is neither particularly useful or important.
The meta-message from the first half is what gives this book a high score.

- The book tells you that it is ok to shoot for the stars when every one else tells you other wise. If you want to start you own business and your a women PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK TODAY!
- Although I believe Lynne Franks has good insight for people who want to start their own business, I found it annoying the way that she would name drop and take credit for the success of others. If you are looking for an uplifting book that will help you take the next step toward running your own business, I would recommend, "Building a Business the Buddhist Way : A Practitioner's Guidebook" by Geri Larkin. This book provides the inspiration to take the next step and more practical advise on how to write a business plan and get started.

- A great inner workbook to get the prosperity consciousness going. Very affirmative in tone and lots of anecdotes. A list of other resources is included to continue learning about blending soul with capitalism. Best to use the Suze Orman books in conjunction with one such as this. Franks offers the inner wealth techniques, Orman outlines actually action strategies to bring money and abundance into physical existence.
- This is a great book for anyone starting a business. I have had a consulting business for 2 years and I am using this book now to grow and further my business. It is a wonderful process.
