  1. This book has lots of detailed, accurate information about NASDAQ and the stocks that trade there. Unless you plan to buy and sell these stocks (which I would advise against for most people), this information is of little value. The book is a good implementation of an inappropriate book concept for most people.

The author makes a great comment. " . . . [T]he market is a place for risk capital." I interpret that to mean money that you can afford to lose, like money you have after you have provided for your retirement, paying for college educations, getting rid of your credit card debt, etc. Now, very few people are in the circumstance to have risk capital. Unless you do, stop thinking about investing in individual stocks now.

If you do have risk capital, I suggest you read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" as your first step. Because it is unlikely that your risk capital should be going first into stocks.

If for some reason, you feel you must be in stocks, please read John Bogle's Common Sense About Mutual Funds.

My favorite quote in the book is "If an investor had used only P/E ratios as a guide to purchase stocks, she or he would have missed out on many large gainers." That is certainly true, and missing out on those gainers would also have allowed you to miss out on many losers . . . and gainers that became losers. Can you think of a stock with an overpriced P/E in March 2000 that is higher today?

Skip this book unless you are thinking about becoming a stock broker.

After you read this review, I suggest you think about other areas where having less knowledge is an advantage. For example, would it help you to know more or less about post-surgical complications?

Take advantage of all those situations when less knowledge is more! Keep your risk capital where it belongs, as the author recommends!

  2. Excellent primer for those seeking to profit from the Nasdaq market. Max Issacman explains why the market is the hottest and most volatile; how even a novice investor can easily experience the market through QQQ shares; and why now may be the time to invest when the herd is headed in the opposite direction.

  3. As an investor for over some 20 years, I am always interested in new strategies, forecasts and presciptions for successful investing. Mr. Isaacman's book offers a fresh new perspective which incorporates all of the newly developed tools available to today's investor. Concise but conclusive, the Nasdaq Investor addresses a host of investment strategies which the new investor will be able to employ to assist in building their portofolio's performance and wealth, and the established investor can utilize to revamp, overhaul or adjust their portfolios to simply attain better results with less risk and anxiety. The book can also be used as a reference guide for various strategies in different market cycles which is really nice as the markets have become so dynamic in the recent past. The author's 35 years of experience in the investment community is brought to the forefront in the Nasdaq Investor.

  4. this book showed me the importance of having a dicipline.the book was easy to read and helped me create a strategy using index investing.mr.Isaacman's book makes a significant contribution to the current body of investment knowledge.

  1. The Small Investor is an excellent book to read if you are looking for a complete and basic introduction to the subject of investing. I found the chapters on Professional Help and Selecting Mutual Funds to be particularly helpful. A feature that Jim Gard included that I really appreciate is the "Recommended Further Reading" that is at the end of each chapter. It gives you a place to go to examine the subject in more detail than would be appropriate in a "Primer." This book is ideal for anyone just entering the world of investments. Financial Planners and Money Managers should consider giving a copy of this book to each of their new clients. Jim Hagen

  2. The down-to-earth approach of this book ensures that it is more dense than other guides for beginners. Gets you from knowing absolutely nothing to a level at which you can start reading about technical analysis, read financial papers, annual and quarterly reports. Good 'further reading' tips. Good coverage of bonds. Options and futures are discarded as being equivalent to gambling. Parts about the risks of investing, how to spread the investment, and the role of brokers is a little boring, but this really is a good starter.

  1. Following WADE COOK's advice in this and his classic WALL STREET MONEY MACHINE, I bought options on YHOO prior to their last split and nearly doubled my money in one day.

Stock splits are predictable, safe and easy way to make money quickly...as long as you follow the advice and precautions that Wade teaches. Many will remember that stocks like Compaq, split and never came back up again. In fact, dropped by 300% after splitting. But Wade warned us about Compaq and other stocks like Compaq that should have been avoided.

Following WADE'S advice has enabled me to quit my full time job, stay home with my children and make a nice living.

    Thanks WADE!

  2. I bought this book along with Wall Street Money Machine back in July 1998 during yet another "Clinton Bear Market" I was amazed to see that I could make money even during a down market. Highly recommend Stock Market Miracles and Wall Street Money Mchine (now known as Wall Street Money Machine Vol I & II.

  3. Following the strategies in this great book by Wade Cook, I have made 20% returns since 1997 and I still made money even during the Clinton Bear Market.

Most of Wade's strategies are bear market in nature anyway. They are as safe as safe can be when trading in the stock market. Big upside. Little downside. Great book.

  4. In this sequel to the best selling Wall Street Money Machine, Wade Cook goes even deeper into his revolutionary and new strategies for cash flowing the stock market. There is more information on stock splits, options, rolling stocks, buying and selling calls and puts, tandem plays and so much more. This book makes a great companion to Wall Street Money Machine.

  5. I bought Stock Market Miracles along with Wall Street Money Machine back in 1997. Using Wade's option strategies I was, as a total beginner, green as green could be turn $250 into $1350 in three weeks on my first play, $400 into $4800 on my second play and $1500 into $7000 (on a 3/1 post stock split play) in 3 days.

As a total novice, I was excited to say the least. Wade Cook and Robert Allen are two of the very best financial coaches today. I also recommend Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

Take the naysayer with a grain of salt. This guy obviously has an agenda that does not include helping you.

By the way, I made those gains without using Wade's newest and more advanced strategies disclosed in Wade's newest book Wade Cook's Stock Picking Handbook. I recommend that you go to Wade's website www.wadecook.org.

5 comments about The Predictors: How a Band of Maverick Physicists Used Chaos Theory to Trade Their Way to a Fortune on Wall Street.
  1. With over 80,000,000 Americans investing in the stock market, many believe that they can quickly and easily go in and 'out-think' all those other traders who "just aren't as smart as I am." Well, before you go in and compete against the big boys, you might want to read this book to get a good understanding of who and what you are competing against.

There is an old saying that goes "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out." Yeah, well, maybe not. But, when you try to outwit the market, you better realize that you are competing against rocket scientists, and physicists, and mathematicians who attack the market in ways the average investor can't even comprehend. Yet, that is who you compete against in the market.

This book tells the story of a group of physicists and their friends who set out to build an automated trading system that would rule the market. Did they succeed? Well, I wouldn't want to give away the ending. But, needless to say, before you jump into the stock market and get your ego and pocketbook devastated, you might want to read about how difficult it is to 'rule the market' even when you have some of the best brains in the US tackling the problem with resources that you and I will never have.

This book should be required reading before a person can invest in the stock market.

  2. this book could be better, but the author is giving too much details of some unnecessary objects, like describing the weather and shape of the chin of someone or what sandwich some unrelated guy is eating and what underwears they like for 2 paragraphs. suddenly he jumps to talk about the history of sante fe and the Zozoba a couple of times which i still dont know what the heck is it.

i got so irritated readin about the excessive writings on completely unrelated objects and subjects that i paid less attention even when he is talking about the related characters.

after all the mental abuse, we are left with nothing about how the adventure eventaully goes...REFUND!Not a recommended read, skip!

  3. I read this book as part of research into quantitative trading hedge funds in order to get some insight into a group of early players. The book is actually quite well written (obviously devoid of any useful information for easily building your own models!) and highlights both the personal and practical elements of starting a hedge fund with little prior financial experience but with an idea (that has been shown to be quite lucrative if not failsafe in a post 8/07 world).
A fun book that is also useful for understanding some of the issues and history of quant trading. Prediction Company still exists, though without any of the colorful founders, and has spun off some interesting hedge funds.

  4. To quote: "They begin an animated discussion about some of the basic ideas that will later be used at Prediction Company. The technique involves fitting functions to time series. Imagine a stream of data, a record of daily sunspot activity, for example. The sunspot activity on two successive days is two numbers, which can be represented as points in a plane. The sunspot activity on the next day can be thought of as a point suspended above this plane. The picture of sunspot activity for a year will be a cloud of points in three dimensional space. To make a forecasting model, one fits a surface, like a rumpled sheet, through this cloud of data. If the sheet fits in close proximity to all the data points, it will be a good model. Forecasts are made by stretching the sheet into regions where additional data points will be recorded when the future rolls into the present". The idea is in the air... This description is recognisable to someone who has independently arrived at something similar -- but probably not informative to the rest. Here at we would not entrust an extrapolation of an analytical fit (no matter how non-linear) with anybody's money -- what you want to do is data compression of some sort, and there are more conservative compression tools than a fit. One may also object to the business model of striking an exclusive deal with a single large client, as opposed to marketing the service to thousands of individual traders. Overall, valuable historic reading to someone with similar interests.

  5. I was expecting help as a new person wanting to learn investment and possibly trading. Morally and ethically, I couldn't warm up to the utter lack of foresight or responsibility of clever market manipulation to "win at any cost". A distorted morality of a group of mavericks that set the tone for the current economic ailment. When does amoral become immoral. I burned the book rather than risk its recycling for someone to be inspired & motivated by its utter lack of respect for human kind just for the sake of "can it be done"! I spoze the only just outcome would be to know what they are doing with their fortunes - - - and hope they are giving to GOOD like Gates & Buffett, et al!

5 comments about Penny Stocks: The Next American Gold Rush.
  1. Great book to start off. Its a penny bible. I have made some nice money over the years investing in pennies....this book should be selling at 100 bucks...not at the amazon price. If there is one book you need..get this.

  2. I can't believe that any of the other reviewers have experience trading stocks. This book doesn't give you any concrete startegies. Basically stick with the top 100 volume pennies and then scan the online boards for ideas. He says to have a plan for exits, but it is basically take a guess - no rational. In one example he has a 5 stock portfolio, then "adds" up all the gains and says he had a net return of over 1800%. While still impressive, the gain on the portfolio is closer to 400%.

The only decent advice is to use limit orders so you don't whacked by slippage, and to do due diligence (though he admits he doesn't on most picks). This book is pretty much an intro to pennies then fly by the seat of your pants. It doesn't deal with pennies on the NASDAQ or NYSE, just OTCBB and pink sheets.

  3. This was a pretty good book on penny stocks. I like how the author mentions that visting message board communities to hunt for ideas and rumors etc, is key while investing in penny stocks. That is very true, and not many people realize it can be a fundamental part of the investment process in penny stocks. The one downfall this book has, is that it was written in 1999 when the market was booming and the economy was robust. Now it is much harder to capitialze on the penny stocks, specifically those involved with some sort of technological advance. I found nearly half to all of the websites mentioned... to be defunct and non-operational. This just shows those penny stock pickers that investing in a bear market in such small securities is hazardous to your wealth, and nearly impossible to capitialize on.

  4. Outstanding book for starting into pennys. Good description of the various ways to trade, and the forces behind the market. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's considering penny stocks.

  5. Well first let me say that this is a very short book - easily read in one sitting with 118 real pages. Unfortunatley for this book, it came out in 1999 so as we know this was during the hayday of stock fever. I found that a lot of his referenced website's don't exist anymore and only a fraction of his bulletin board's mentioned still survive. He also talk's about them WAY to much. In the era of technology and pertinent information, this was it's major downfall. Where he recommends bulletin board's for talking to others about stock & recommendations, I've only found the "bashers" and the "pump and dump'ers". No real value there unless you get lucky. I mean he even defines "LOL". I could hardly believe it. Most, if not all his examples make it sounds like he's a zillionaire, yet he's made several thousand. Whoopie. I've only found on average that less that 3-5 stocks a day go up significantly, and finding out when one or two stocks in a 1000 is going to "pop", impossible. Day trading of penny stocks is not recommended but there are several decent strategies shown for several day and on holding/playing the game. Penny stocks are nothing like Nasdaq except the way you buy and sell. Uber-Volility is the name of the game and it's very easy to loose. I read the book and it makes it look it's just to easy.. well in 99', it was hard to loose. In today's economy, it's a whole different ballgame. If you need some strategies, this could potentially be a good book, otherwise it's far outdated with old websites, and potentially incorrect inforation for the well informed. Read's like it was written by a sophmore in high-school, so it maybe an easy to understand, but of questionable value on 2004.

  1. If only if you are an investor, and enjoy such books. This is the place to get it and read about this excellent book to help with Monetary Economic Thought.

  2. I received this book as a gift and found it to be quite entertaining. Nice anthology of articles on investing, fincancial history, and business success in general. Very eclectic group of writers ranging from Benjamin Graham to P.T. Barnum (I have always found Barnum's "Rules for Success" to be invaluable). Very hard to put down once you have begun. Even harder not to finish the book a bit wiser.
