5 comments about EVA and Value-Based Management: A Practical Guide to Implementation.
  1. This book, together with 'The Quest for Value'by G. Bennett Stewart, III and 'Valuation' by the Tom Copeland, provide a solid backgound on value-based management. S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne give a fair description of their book: 'This book is not a intended to be a "teaser," which tries to tell you enough to whet your appetite so if you want to know more you will have to hire us as your consultants. We aim to be as comprehensive in our treatment of the subject as possible...We try to hold nothing back.' Thank you very much indeed.

  2. This book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical, oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.

My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.

This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa, and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.

Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style, which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....

  3. As an author, speaker and consultant on these topics, I highly recommend this book. Not only have the authors discussed the pros and cons of a number of approaches thoughfully and concisely, they also expand the level of understanding related to the calculations in an accessible way. Their book discusses both implementation issues and the nitty gritty of the mechanics. In sum, the book takes the reader to the next level of understanding. I highly recommend this book.

  4. Kudos to S. David Young and Stephen F. O'Byrne, management consultants who largely steer clear of their industry's usual empty catchphrases and superficial hype. Instead, their lucid explanation of the importance of shareholder value takes center stage. The heftiness of EVA and Value-Based Management may be daunting, but most readers will be satisfied with Part I's strategic overview. The concepts reappear in Part II accompanied by a wealth of technical details, calculations and case studies to help finance professionals with nitty-gritty implementation of EVA (Economic Value Added) programs. The book honestly assesses EVA's power to motivate managers, noting that some companies just are not well-suited for this performance metric. We from getAbstract prescribe this book to corporate executives who have overdosed on consultant jargon but still want to drive value growth in their companies, and to finance specialists who seek a comprehensive roadmap to EVA implementation.

  5. The specific book is analytical with respect to the EVA model and how it is calculated. It also presents the whole procedure starting from the beta estimation, CAPM, WACC and all the necessary elements for the implementation and interpretation of EVA.

As a drawback we can say that it lacks numerical examples. It contains few examples that are very simple. I would prefer more sophisticated examples in order to implement EVA model more easily.

    Best Wishes.

5 comments about Controller and CFO's Guide to Accounts Payable.
  1. I'm a big fan of Ms Schaeffers, and I found this book extremely helpful, for both myself and my department

  2. The most prolific author of Accounts Payable books, newsletters and articles gets better and better with each piece.
This time she presents Accounts Payable for the most senior financial professionals in a way that is thought provoking, informative and written in her straightforward style.
As a senior financial professional from New York I am always looking for ways to improve the performance of my business and to better understand the impact of my decisions on my organization.
Schaeffer's most recent book, "Controller and CFO's Guide to Accounts Payable", is able to illustrate how the decisions you make at the top drive behavior throughout your organization.
This book will cause you to think about your AP Department in a new more effective way.

  3. This book was lent to me by my boss. As a finance student and executive assistant to a CFO, I found it extremely informative and helpful. I am always looking for ways to better understand and become more efficient in the field I work in, Ms. Scheaffer has definetely played a part in this. I look forward to reading more of her books.

  4. With some advice from a friend who has been in accounts payable for years, I picked up this book and started a foundation for my accounts payable career. I have confidence and the information I need to make the much needed changes to setup our AP department. It is so much easier to read then the other books out there, and found myself able to retain the information much easier with the down to earth examples.

  5. I would like to recomend "Controller and CFO's Guide to Accounts Payable" by Mary Schaeffer. I found the advice in this book to be very helpful in managing my accounts payable. I would recommend this book to anyone who is currently working with accounts payable. The techniques prove to be very successful.

  1. This book helped me get a good start in my Accounting college courses. It lays out the fundamental principles of Accounting simply and clearly. Its emphasis on the process leading to, creation of, and analysis of financial statements, would be very helpful to anyone who may need to understand just what a company's financial statements really mean

  2. This is an easy book to follow. Lots of exercises for practice and the answers are in the text so you can check and see if you got it or if you need to study more.

  3. This book helped me a lot understand the various topics of accounting quickly and easily. If you completely dont understand anything about accounting, this is the book for you.

  4. Book is in new condition, and got here very quick! Thanks so much! Will do business with again.

  5. I was pleased with the fast delivery service from the seller. Book is in great condition, and is exactly what the seller said it would be. I will use this seller in the future and will recommend this seller to anyone that is looking to buy a quality book at a discounted price.

5 comments about Management Accounting (5th Edition).
  1. I have the edition that has been translated into Dutch. It explained a lot of things for me. I find it easy to read and simple and very useful examples, but would like an answer book.
I did pay a much lower price (under $15), this does affect my judgement.
Use this book in conjunction with Cost Accounting by Horngren, Foster and Datar.

  2. This reads like an introductory text in the subject. The maths treatment is pretty easy. Nothing approaching calculus, unlike many contemporary economics texts. Significant portions of the book revolve around the proper accounting of costs for developing and marketing a product.

Many examples are given from traditional manufacturing contexts. In part to give a concrete feel to the analysis of allocating effort.

Another important aspect covered is how to deal with cost driver changes. Where the rates of different factors can increase (rarely do they decrease!). You are also given multiple measures of performance. There is no single correct metric; an important lesson in itself.

Each chapter has a substantial exercise set at its conclusion. A deliberately non-trivial effort is needed to do these. But well worth it in order to drive home the chapters' ideas.

  3. I ordered this book online and my copy was full of typos, missing pages, and missing portions of problems. This created problems for understanding the concepts.

On the upside, the text was clear and the explanations were sufficient to understand the examples.

  4. I have not received this book and I ordered almost a month ago. This is the first experience I have had of this kind. I don't appreciate spending my money for something and not receiving it.

    Latonya

  5. This book does not have good explanations or examples. When explaining information, they use too much of their own terminology, which can be very confusing if you don't understand that terminology.

  1. This book is essentially an introductory managerial accounting book which purports to be an undergraduate text but is really at a high school level. As promised, it has an "easy-to-understand presentation" and uses a "hands-on learning approach". The book is clear in its presentation, it does a good job at providing plenty of easy-to-read tables, and it uses plenty of real-world applications as examples. However, it is extremely lacking in depth. Instead of providing you with a large quantity of useful, practical information, it gives you a small amount of that information and just a taste of what the field is about. After I finished it, I was left with an idea of what Managerial Accounting is about, but I was still rather ignorant regarding the details. I wouldn't recommend for professors to use this as a main textbook in any class, but it might work as a "suggested reading" for students who are having some difficulty with the more depthful textbook that you should be using.

3 comments about Executive Roadmap to Fraud Prevention and Internal Controls: Creating a Culture of Compliance.
  1. In this book, the author explains fraud in terms that are clear and understandable to the reader. He is able to provide in very simple terms how fraud schemes work and how damaging fraud can be. The book is serious, yet at times humorous. It is well worth the money, not just for CEOs, but for the American public.

  2. While reading this book I was very impressed with the accessibility of the information provided. The authors have done a tremendous job of breaking down this complex view of individual and corporate behaviors into windows that are easy to see through and understand. With understanding comes the responsibility of doing something to decrease the opportunities for fraud in companies both large and small. As a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, I will be providing copies of this book to my clients -- along with our award-winning toolset for governing compliance -- because the book makes my educational mission easier to accomplish. Excellent for all levels of an organization.

  3. "A thing worth having is a thing worth cheating for," said W.C. Fields, though the executive fraudsters from Enron, Adelphia and WorldCom who are now languishing in prison might disagree. Two others who disagree are former federal agents Martin Biegelman and Joel Bartow. Now fraud investigators at U.S. companies, the authors have pooled their considerable knowledge in this comprehensive overview of what fraud is, how it occurs and how to prevent it. The book briefly describes everything a busy executive needs to know about antifraud programs. Actually, they provide everything and more, which is the rub. The book is repetitious and disorganized, bogs down in irrelevant legislative history, contains a spotty index and reads like a series of verbose PowerPoint slides. We recommend this book to those who can look beyond ponderous presentation and need a single-volume overview on stopping the many ruses to which any company is vulnerable. Fraudsters take note: Your days are numbered if CEOs and CFOs take this book to heart.
