  1. Smoke & Mirrors walks the reader through the arcane, bewildering world of the modern corporation, showing how contradictions suffuse the accountants motives and corporate morality--or immorality in most cases. It is a basic introduction to the limits of numbers, whoever issues them, and highly critical of conventional wisdom. No review does justice to its subtle account of numerous basic issues, but it shows how one must be beware of fiction in today's global economy.

It is an excellent read, short and well-written, and very sophisticated regarding the corporate world. Its a basic read even for the most advanced analyst.

  1. Unfortunately I had to buy the book and read all 600 pages of it. It was my textbook for one of my courses at uni. Generally, the content of the book is quite all right, but lots of mistakes (esp. of numerical nature) make the book nearly worthless. If your lecturer wants to use this book as a reference, tell her/him it is even not worth the way to the bookshop.

  2. This textbook is used in our MBA International Finance course (1 semester) and we basically covered about 80% of the materials in the class. The book is well organised and, most importantly, the notations are very clear which helps understanding the materials. Each chapter include a list of references so that students who need to do further research (e.g. for their projects) can start from there. There are also extensive references to the current developments in international finance arena including internet links. We used the Conceptual Questions and Problems at the end of each chapter for revision purpose as well. I do not find much numerical errors as other reviewers mentioned in 2nd edition. Overall I find it very well-written and was useful for my learning experience.

  3. The seller sent the book out the same day. That was great but the postal service dropped the ball. The book was routed to vermont instead of virginia but the seller offered a refund and was very empathetic.

  4. I got a very good price, a great book, and the shipping time was good.

1 comments about Handbook of German Business Management.
  1. Very concise summary of business and management topics from the German perspective. If your attention span is as short as a Sunday comic strip, you will like it.

Each topic is built like Arnold Schwarzenegger: powerful, yet compact and scientifically engineered with a distinct German accent. The bad side; the subjects are told with the same amount of humor as Arnold displayed in "Conan the Barbarian".
The Germans have a knack for maintaining the discipline of getting to the academic bottomline without starting to ramble. But this did not come easy: The beginning editor, Professor Grochla either died or retired or both during the process and it took more than 10 years to complete the books, sort of a biblical comparison.

    Amazing breadth of related topics.

Not for how-to fans, browsing the mall bookstore for get-rich-quick recipes, but an excellent reference, especially for students of the subject who don't want to look through tons of books, but prefer one-stop-knowledge shopping. Sort of the business book version of the Kelloggs variety pack. $250 seems kind of pricey, but think of all the other business administration and management books you don't have to buy anymore...

  1. A useful book that provides a good summary comparing differing Accounting Standards and approaches between countries. However, it is not worth the price. It is supposedly written for later year undergraduate and masters accounting students. It is more suitable for general second year accounting students. Plus, as I am working with a multinational European bank in Japan, the book is, rapidly becoming, out of date. There is none of the simply but incisive commentary which can be found in other books about the differences and outcomes of general accounting principals drawn from different countries.

  2. This book, written as a text for accounting/business students, provides an excellent overview of accounting standards around the world. Rather than providing a detailed listing of accounting standards for each country (best left for reference texts and online, easily updatable sources) the authors focus on the key features of accounting standards, disclosures and harmonization efforts worldwide.

This book provides an excellent, basic primer in international accounting. It is easily read by anyone with a basic understanding of business and finance and/or accounting. The authors provide numerous examples of international financial reporting, taken from actual financial statements and annual reports.

  3. Maybe I am not as smart as the reviewer from Texas who gave this book five stars. I profoundly disliked this textbook. At best it is a mediocre piece of work.

    Here are my gripes:

    a) The authors do not concentrate on the essential. Particularly painful for me were chapters 3 and 4. There were so many long narratives that touched on insignificant things. See page 132: What changed in accounting when Mexico declared independence from Spain? Instead, information of relevance is missing. For example the accounting for pension liabilities in other countries should have been examined closer.

    b) Explanations are complicated and long.

    c) One is unnecessarily burdened with references to what happened in the past. Who cares what regulation was passed in 1965 when it is no longer in effect today. Such references may be appropriate for a research paper, but not for a textbook. When we get out in the real world, it will be more important to know what rules are in effect at this point.

Overall, it was a drag studying from this book week by week. Isn't there anything better out there on international accounting?

  1. I bought this book to use in an undergraduate business class (International Finance)

Two of my teachers have commented on the fact that it is primarily used for graduate courses, however the concepts are explained clearly enough for a undergraduate to understand.

  2. Unless you have prior knowledge of currency trading or the international finance world you won't understand a damn thing after the 5th or 6th chapter. The author goes in depth about these complex theories and mathematical equations that can be exceptionally difficult to follow ESPECIALLY if you are NEW to the subject.

This book is terrible period, I would recommend if you take International Finance (class), to buy a book (dummies guide er something) to go along with this to make it a little easier to understand. I don't know who this guy is trying to impress but I was throughly pissed off that I paid over a hundred bucks for this USELESS book. The author teaches it way over everybody's head.....

  3. The book arrived on time and in good condition. I am very happy with the transaction.

  4. This was a great buy! I saved so much money buying the book from this site and the book was in perfect condition. From now on when I buy my university textbooks I will make sure to go to this site before I bother buying it directly from the school.
I am so happy we have Amazon as another tool available to purchase items at affordable prices. Thank You!

  5. I was very please with the condition and price of the book. Received in less than a week too.

  1. We adopted this book during the first semester of 1999 with excellent results. Our students were delighted with the practical approach, and the breadth of its contents. Recently our country has been through a monetary turmoil, and the book served very much to explain the policies that our local central bank authorities have been pursuing.

  2. This textbook may not be a good choice for undergraduate students or for someone who does not have an intermediate or higher knowledge of finance. Wording in the chapters and in the end of chapter problems can be confusing. Statements are made and then not backed up with supporting information. The book spends a large amount of time on a macroeconomic view.

  3. The author uses a lot of wordy language to make simple concepts complicated. Also I agree with another review: there is a lot of macroeconomics. I think Dr. Shapiro needs to understand how his readers learn, not how he can enjoy his writing.
