  1. This is a great mystery, as those who have read Josephine Tey's novel know. Malahide is great (and when is he not) as a small town lawyer who fears he's in over his head when a criminal case comes his way. Did they or didn't they? Keeps you guessing until the final moments.

  1. Informative and witty, it's narration keeps the viewer captured throughout the program. Fun to watch and conveys the message. Definitely not a sleeper!

  2. Fast-paced, commonsense, uncomplicated guide to organizing the way you should think about and act with your investment dollars. This is a great introduction to the world of personal finance for young adults and the not so young. I wish I had it 10 years ago.

5 comments about Self-Discipline and Emotional Control.
  1. Instructor Tom Miller needs to be the first to take his self control and discipline lecture. Not only should he participate, he must watch the tape and seriously analyze his own behavior! With a title "How to Stay Calm and Productive Under Pressure", you would expect the instructor to be a role model, wouldn't you?

He is arrogant, abrasive, loud and extremely pushy and I mean that literally. In his attempt to get the audience to understand and respond to him, he gets right smack in their face; he pokes them on the shoulder, screams while intimidating and belittling the audience.

Sure, he has the audience's attention! He makes them respond throughout the entire program! No one can "nod off" in this class.

Using the "horse within us" metaphor, he makes his point that we all have a horse within us that gets out, stomps around and does damage. The anger (the horse) we release stomps around (spewing hostilities) and here, we should learn to "corral" our horse.

You will learn how to change bad habits, control hotheadedness, handle conflicts and reduce stress. True, it's the long metaphorical route, but you get the point!! ...MzRizz

  2. Well this is a must for anyone who wants to understand (in plane language) what it take to control their emotions or change a learned behavior or habit in themselves or in someone else.

It also helps to in understanding why most people will "never change." Dr. Tom's techniques are unorthodox and a tad weird but as he said "He's just kidding " and everything is "designed to help you learn and remember."

There is so much valuable insight gained from this program. I cannot begin to convey how important this book has been to me; Mostly, in the practice of matching my emotions to the reality that I am investing them in. I have been over investing my emotions, as in Bi Polar Disorder. This Program has quite literally saved my life. Thank You Dr. Tom "popping-"thumbs Up" to you.

  3. This is a video that makes little sense and goes on and on. The guy acts like a jerk and over simplifies intrapersonal relationships. If anyone acted the way he did in a work place they would be terminated. Screaming, yelling, and making stupid faces, I thought these things got left behind in kindergarten. If he came up to me and began yelling and poking at me, I would have to warn him about boundaries he is crossing.

  4. The power of these tapes really depends on the viewer. Just like how a pen/quill can produce Shakespeare or gobbledygook, these tapes can be life changing for the positive. It has the power not just to affect one's own behaviour and outlook but in so doing it can/could have an impact on everyone we subsequently encounter.

It teaches us to better understand how 'bad' a negative event really is so that we can deal with it more constructively. All too often we may be in the habit of exagerating negative events and end up 'overeacting' to them. This overaction can have consequences for ourselves as well as those around us.

It also teaches us that everybody has weaknesses that means even though they may say one thing, they could end up doing something completely different, based on deeply ingrained habits. Awareness of this human characteristic is the first step towards doing something about it.

By far the most useful part is a focus on the misguided notion of self esteem that creates a rollercoaster of good and bad evaluations of ourselves based on how well we think we did in our latest endeavour. The Speaker teaches us that it is literally impossible to rate ourselves as a whole because humans are just way too complex with over 500,000 traits & characteristics that could be individually rated. All too often we focus on just one aspect of ourselves and if we choose to give ourselves less than 100%, we could well be inclined to say we are zero% or worthless. Coupling this 'all or nothing' thinking with 'Tunnel Vision' where we focus on but one trait or characteristic out of 500,000 is a perfect recipe for low self esteem. The speaker teaches us to discard the self esteem idea and go for Self Acceptance instead. Here we accept the fallability of ourselves and others and look to improve ourselves but realise that it is not an imperative requirement but just a sensible preference.

The tapes do not come cheap, but their potential to change lives for the better makes them one of the best investments a person could make in managing their emotional future.

The speaker's style is not the norm, but the more times you watch the tapes the more you can focus on the message and perhaps understand why the style is as it is.

If you only ever watch one self help video, make it this one.

5/5 is being inaccurate 10/5 is closer to the mark! :-)

If you buy it, then make sure that your package includes the accompanying workbook. The tapes will be less useful without it as the speaker refers to it constantly throughout the training sessions.

  5. I was at this seminar when Mr. Miller gave it in San Francisco those many years ago...and it changed my whole life. The content is humor filled and speaks directly to you; no matter WHO you are! And Miller is a brilliant speaker who "grabs you by the side of your head and shakes you up!" He is truly gifted.
I bought the tapes and workbook the day I left the seminar, not wanting to be without them afterward. I have used them a number of times to "remind my horse and driver who is boss!" LOL
Having been recently married, I have introduced my new husband to the tapes. He loves them as much as I do.
6 years and going, I have owned these tapes and benefited from Mr. Miller's words...I would not give them away or get rid of them for anything!
This is a gift for yourself and your family, friends and workmates that is worth every cent and more! You will find yourself in a great place; and others will benefit as well from your new found knowledge. And you will find yourself sharing and growing as a person. UGH! I could go on and on and on.
Trust me; trust yourself and get this set!!!

5 comments about Suze Orman - The Courage To Be Rich.
  1. Suze Orman's Book is well written and thoughtful, that being said, she doesn't provide anything beyond common sense and basic knowledge: Stop accruing debt, live within your means, pay off those high interest credit cards, distinguish between good and bad loans, save money, INVEST YOUR MONEY. All this is the same material you will find in every beginning personal finance book, and online for free. The problem is that after peddling all these little trinkets of knowledge, with an over indulgent helping of self-pity, she doesn't help you make a plan or answer some fundamental questions. Like...HOW? This book does not provide the basic mechanics of how to do what she says, and gives no details on how (in financial basics) she got where she is. How do I redistribute my debt so I can pay it off (what is a good time horizon), how should I save money so I don't get burned out by saving, how do I mentally control my spending, and most importantly how do I invest the darn money? If you tel people to save and invest, you need to give them a hint of a plan (e.g., save 10% of every paycheck, but no more, so you grow to hate saving money) or maybe also just a single chapter on where to invest the money beyond, use your 401(k). Maybe one on why being too risk averse is bad. Ultimately, this book simply provides abstract goals, that require you to go out and get another book to help you get perspective on getting there. So just skip it, and get the next book.

  2. I'm a little sorry to see all of the negative reviews this book has gotten, since I found it to be one of the most eye-opening things I've ever read and, by following some of its advice, have gotten my finances into better shape than they have been in years.

Let me clarify some things. This is not a book for the financially advanced, for professionial money managers or financial advisors, or for stock brokers. The intended audience here is the "Average Person" who works at something else every day but wants to better understand how to handle their money. This person probably has credit card debt, spotty savings, and some bad financial habits. I had none of those things when I picked up this book and I still learned tons from reading it.

The principal message here is that being rich begins with your thoughts. They way we think about money determines to a huge degree what we do with it, how we invest it, and how we spend it. I think no one will deny that fundamental truth, but Suze's gift is finding the ways to connect our thoughts with practical advice to change bad habits for the better. Many people could make a few simple changes in their lives and end up with a lot more money, and over time, that could mean real wealth.

It is true that some of the conclusions here will seem obvious to the financially savvy. But I question the idea that this is all "repackaged common knowledge." It isn't. Her messages are of the kind that bear repeating. How many people still buy a $3.50 latte every morning, stick thousands of dollars in a bank savings account at .2% interest, and have credit card debt well beyond what they can afford? If it were so obvious that these are unwise things to do with money, fewer people would do them! Suze shows that it's not enough just to recognize financially unhealthy behavior, you must also understand your personal history with money, the way you have been taught to think about it and value it, and understand how that history influences your financial decisions. Her recognition of the emotional value of money gives her the edge over other financial how-to books, which typically assume that money is a raw numbers game. It's much more than that, and Suze is right on insisting so.

Her most controversial advice is that you, and not a financial planner, must ultimately be responsible for your money, and I think a lot of the one-star ratings below are from frightened financial planners who know that Suze is onto their game. She does not, for the record, say that you should never work with one, but simply acknowledges that the ultimate responsibility for your money is with YOU and not someone you pay to organize your investments. I think she's right, and with all of the online resources available today, there's no reason to be ignorant about how money works in our society. A little more attention from you can mean a lot more peace with your money, and being responsible makes it much easier to make money grow.

One of the best sections of this book comes at the end, when she talks about the importance of giving. I just loved her discussion of how important it is to give and wish everybody would read it! In our greedy world, it's a message that needs to be heard.

I found this book lifechanging and hope others can too.

  3. In Suze Orman's book / CD there is tons of excellent information. Listening to this CD and reading her book has helped me very much. I encourage anyone to buy this and study it throughly!

  4. I won't say much but the book will help a lot of people who are lost about saving money or spend too much money. Suze's common sense is simple but it comes from personal experiences. I was surprised to learn that her father dropped out of law school to run the family chicken stand business. I knew about Suze's work at the Buttercup Bakery and her life after college. Of course, Suze does leave out her personal. It was only recently that she came out of the closet and announced her lesbianism and long-term committed relationship to her producer, Kathy Travis, known as K.T. Suze does not write about gays or lesbians at all in this book. She writes about mostly heterosexuals who have misplaced their own common sense about money. SHe writes about her own losses and mistakes along the way which has infused her with knowledge to correct herself and others from making the same mistakes. This book is to help and assist people in difficult situations. This book may help somebody out but it would be nice if she came out with her own autiobiography.

  5. This is one of my favorite books and messages. I recommend it to everyone.
