5 comments about What Were You Thinking??: $600-Per-Hour Legal Advice on Relationships, Marriage & Divorce.
  1. My bride (we are still writing thank you notes for our wedding gifts) and I sat up until 2am the night we were given this book, laughing and reading parts of it aloud to each other. We both loved the part cautioning readers that whatever bugs you about your intended before the wedding will only get worse as the years pass... so true. The author, a tough divorce attorney, takes a pretty hard line: if you don't want to get divorced, then don't get ever get married. Well, we already did exactly what he advises against, but there was still plenty of valuable reading here. It gave this newlywed lots to think about... particularly enjoyed the interview with Gene Simmons, of all people, about relationships. Funny cartoons. Very enjoyable book.

  2. I am only 1/8 through this book and I WISH I had read this when I was 18. I am 52 and have been married to two sociopaths. A lot of the book verbalizes things many of us KNOW but we IGNORE. I recommend reading this to anyONE contemplating marriage. It's a wake up call. Makes you THINK. Some of us need someone to SAY things clearly in black and white. That would be ME. Well here it is... I plan on writing another review after completing reading this book. Stay tuned...

  3. The author tends to engage in conjecture at times, but overall, his book is very insightful on the divorce process and it definitely makes one realize all the practical implications of a marriage. People often decide to marry when they are on such an emotional high that they do not realize how tough it is to merge lives and property together.

I would have liked to have seen more commentary by relationship experts such as Dr. Phil instead of celebrities, but I suppose the author is trying to show how even celebrities have the same marital issues as everyone else.

  4. What were you thinking... we have all asked ourselves that question many times! This book really makes you ask yourself the tough questions that are useful before, during, or after a marriage (or any relationship for that matter). The expertise and insight that Barondess has in regards to marriage and divorce is unique, as well as entertaining! Just the tips on working with an attorney in general are invaluable! I believe everyone who has had, or is thinking of having, a committed relationship (not just getting married), should read this book!

  5. I wish the author really shared his legal expertise with the reader rather than beating around the bushes. The book could and should be much more succinct and to the point, while still easy to read/listened. Instead we get a lot of common sense notions, and many repetitions of the obvious, and not enough actual legalistic information.

I've listened it in the digital format, and from more than 7 hours of audio, no more than 1 hour can be classified as legal advice. The rest is crowd-pleasing filling. Based on the subtitle $600 per hour legal advice, I defintely didn't got $4200 worth of legal advice.

5 comments about What It Takes: Speak Up, Step Up, Move Up: A Modern Woman's Guide to Success in Business.
  1. WOW~!!! this book is like a long paper work of taking bits and pieces of great business books that already exsists.

you know I can't wait for Omorosa's book to come out, I mean the content is going to be the same but I just want to prove my theory to my friends that what if your on TV for more than 6 weeks you get cocky as hell.

If you really want to spend money.. I suggest this book.

  2. After reading other women in business books, I read this & thought it was great. This book talks about men & women in the workplace & how we need to act different to get the same things. This is a quick read & gets right to the point.

I really believe this book has valuable information to help women, some of it basic, all of it in the modern workplace. Having worked in an office for over 10 years, I have seen mistakes that could have been avoided by reading this book.

Some of the things Amy writes about are:
    -Tooting your own horn
-Staying away from gossipy people, they will do nothing for your career but give you a bad reputation
-Sexuality in the workplace - how to act & dress sophisticated rather than sexy
-How to ask for & negotiate a job offer, promotion, raise & benefits
    -Networking with the right people
-How to deal with emotions at work & picking your battles
-How to portray the right image
    -Not to take things personally

The list goes on. There's a lot of helpful information for women in business & I already feel empowered having read this book. I think this is a must for every woman starting out in the business world!

  3. In responce the review stating "Most of the book is filled with common sense"

This book is filled with what *some* people learned naturally and consider common sense. Some people, like me, do not consider this common sense. I'm male but I haven't mastered the art of interacting in a male dominated social business environment. (When I was young, I never learned to play with little boys much either.) So I think this book has lots of valuable information already - and I'm only 1/5 of the way through.

  4. I really like this book, there was a lot of information and substance. Although she was on the Apprentice, Ms. Henry rarely discussed it. She focused on the mistakes that are holding women back in business and showing how to overcome them with very good information. She also provides quotes from other successful women in business.

    I learned a lot.

  5. As the last woman standing on NBC's hit show "The Apprentice," Amy Henry has a lot to say about business. Rather than focusing on her television experience, however, Henry draws from her eight-year career of managing multi-million dollar software projects and offers a host of strategies for success, particularly in male-dominated industries. She insists on the power of networking with the big boys; stealth bragging, so that people will know about your accomplishments; speaking up and using your charm, beauty and womanly intuition. Henry's advice is similar to those found in other books, but her no-nonsense, woman-to-woman approach will be helpful and enjoyable for younger women and those breaking into the business world.

5 comments about An Iron Will.
  1. For those who are looking for a higher power to guide their lives this book may be of help. It stresses the importance of the human will in all endeavors. Reading this book once will inspire you breifly, but if you can summon the will power to sacrifice an hour each day to devote to reading this book, you will begin to inspire others and amaze yourself at the strength you can summon in your hour of need. You will accomplish things of which you only dreamed. Your efforts will become heroic.

  3. As quoted by Marden from this book. This book is all about harnessing the power of your self will to work for you instead of against you. Having a strong sense of will is meaningless if it is misdirected. This work delineates the steps one needs to take to create discipline and willpower to achieve one's goals. It is an absolute must read for anyone who wants to achieve the pinnacle of success in their personal and professional lives.

  4. I read a lot of business-marketing books. It's hard to believe that this book was written in 1901. The examples are motivating, although dated. A fast read at 49 pages. It reads like a slightly older version of ThHINK AND GROW RICH. I'm assuming that AN IRON WILL inspired and provided the framework for the Napoleon Hill book. Solid examples. I ordered several copies as gifts. This isn't the kind of book you read. It's the kind of book you study.

  5. This is a book which is simplistic yet at the same time deep and inspiring. It simply leaves you with no excuses. It's length means it is a book you can truly read every day, yet will make you think and inspire you long after you've read it for the day.

    Get the book.

1 comments about Como Hacerse Rico / Trump: How to Get Rich.
  1. This book may be about a lot of things, but it is not about getting rich. It is more about being rich. It is also about leadership, a quality of which Donald Trump definitely has in abundance. This book, the Spanish text edition of "Trump: How to Get Rich", is peppered with little truisms by which The Donald lives in his business life. Most of them are common sense.

All in all, he comes across as a fairly likable, down-to-earth guy with a pretty healthy ego. Definitely, the meek shall not inherit the earth. He has a lot of nice things to say about many of the people with whom he has worked or transacted business. He also has something to say about those people who have crossed him in one way or another, and it ain't pretty.

He also has something to say about his hit show "The Apprentice". He loves that show, and guess what, so do millions of others, including me. He gives a few general tidbits about how the show came into being and a some back stage bits about its first season. Fans of the show will especially enjoy this part of the book.

Though the book is weak on substance, it is an easy, breezy, little read that sounds like the Donald Trump one hears on the radio and television. He is simply a guy who is enjoying himself immensely and wants everyone to know it. Moreover, the time is ripe for the book, because whatever one's take on the author might be, The Donald is a hot commodity right now, and shy he is not.

5 comments about The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie.
  1. This book was pracitically written for the ambitious young man, as there are many references to this. Mr. Carnegie serves as a great role model, which I feel is quite important, especially considering the terrible events in schools lately. Carnegie emphasizes the importance of self-improvement, knowing your talents, being kind, and also the importance of public speaking. You will learn important lessons thru personal anecdotes of his life. This book should be required reading for every adolescent attending high school.

  2. It has been over a year since I ground my way through this book. My lack of adaptability to the Olde Worlde English may have contributed to this. I found this to be a long book about an interesting individual whose sole purpose for writing the book, I have concluded, was to leave a lasting, self-congratulatory reminder of his own life. I must disagree with a previous review that stated it was a must for any young ambitious person. I am; it wasn't.
For sheer inspiration from another person's life, I would recommend works on Lincoln, the Wright brothers (Kill Devil Hill), Richard Branson, Edison, Spielberg, Mme Curie, Bruce Lee, Iacocca and Einstein.

  3. The vanity of today's uneducated society is breathtaking. White is black and black is white and 'a little knowledge' is indeed proving very dangerous. This book (along with the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin) should be read by every American citizen - to relearn what America once represented.

For example, Carnegie Steel, the world's largest company in 1900, was NOT a corporation; it was a private partnership. The sale of the company to JP morgan (for half a billion dollars) was done on a handshake; a contract was a mere afterthought. Reputation and honesty and customer service were THE guiding principles of the era. 'Individual responsibility' was considered a good thing in those days.

America now has more lawyers per capita than any other nation on Earth. Our politicians now attempt to micro-manage every detail of our lives. You break a fingernail and sue the universe. We have become terrified of freedom. Read this book if you want to understand how America rose from a third world country to a superpower between 1800 and 1900 - without government intervention or welfare or all the millions of rules and regulations we now hold so dear. We have traded away our freedom for security. The price is higher than you think.

  4. I'll admit that my primary motivation for reading this book was somewhat shallow--I basically wanted to read about how one of history's most successful businessmen amassed so much wealth. To be honest, the book didn't really give as many details as I would have liked on that particular interest. But what I got along the way made the book worth it.

First and foremost, after reading 350 pages of Carnegie writing about his life you feel like you really start to know him, to get a sense of what kind of human being he was, and even to get a sense of his somewhat remarkable confidence level that exists in conjunction with his pretty inspiring level of benevolence and compassion. But I think even more than getting a sense of Carnegie, you get a sense of the time he lived in. Some of the most engaging parts of the book for me were the first-hand accounts of Lincoln during the Civil War, or Carnegie's conversations with President Harrison about a small uprising in Chile. You also hear about how he handled the strikes of steel workers, an occurence I'd only read about in history books but never learned directly about from the perspective of the manager.

All throughout Carnegie peppers with his nuggets of wisdom, and you get the feeling he knows people want them really badly but that he chooses to give them sparingly.

In the end, I probably will never re-read this book, but I feel better educated about one of history's greatest industrialists, greatest benefactors, and the time he lived in after having read it. If you have a nascent interest in history, you will most likely enjoy this book; if you're looking for a "how to make your millions" from a master, I would look elsewhere.

  5. Born in Scotland but an immigrant to the United States as a teenager, Andrew Carnegie has been variously characterized as a "captain of industry" or a "robber baron" by those who have chronicled his rise to wealth and fame in the latter nineteenth century. After selling his steel company to J.P. Morgan at the turn of the century, Carnegie devoted himself to philanthropic goals. He gave away more than $350 million to various causes and endowed more than 250,000 libraries. His philanthropic activities were underpinned by a fundamental belief in the virtue of hard work, perseverance, and self-improvement through education, hence his emphasis on libraries and the endowing of other educational organizations. Fundamentally, this book offers a restatement of the "Horatio Alger" myth of the "American dream" of success through personal commitment. At the same time Carnegie seeks to pass on his wisdom gained through a lifetime of effort. A significant and fascinating statement of American industrial individualism that is required reading for all who wish to understand the history of the United States in the latter nineteenth century, Carnegie's autobiography also served as a model for many others to follow. Unfortunately, few achieved the success that Carnegie enjoyed despite the diligence they may have registered.

  1. Great Audio Program! As the student President of UC Santa Barbara's Chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success, which has a membership base of 1000 students, I understand first hand the struggles that most college students face everyday. I wish every one of our members could listen to this program! The question and answer format is extremely helpful and offers further detail than a typical book. The ideas are realistic and easy to implement. The resource CD-rom offers examples and step-by-step directions on how to take action. Regardless of where you are in your personal journey - from a high school student to a graduate student - I truly believe this audio program will bring you value and significantly change the way you approach school. I would also strongly recommend their book The Power of Focus For College Students, How to Make College the Best Investment of Your Life by Les Hewitt, Andrew Hewitt, Luc D'Abadie, and forward by Donald Trump. The book offers additional insight and stories from the authors' lives, as well a few strategies for college success. The two products combined are the perfect receipt for college success!
