4 comments about Net-trading: Strategies from the Frontiers of Electronic Day Trading.
- A very detailed and timely title that takes online trading help to the next level. The strategies are well presented. The first section on system development, why so many systems fail, what a good system tries to capture.
The book details the best web sites for executing these strategies and where to get them. All in all the best yet of all the online trading books.
- Too many trading books just push the author's own proprietary system. In this one Alpesh B Patel has nothing to sell, just plenty of personal experience to share (he's been there as a beginner; he started trading in his spare time as an attorney, and now also writes a net-trading diary column for the Financial Times newspaper). What we get here is a book that covers every base and carries the reader with it. Patel also pulls in expert tips form the pros - names like Pat Arbor and Phil Flynn - but what makes this one different is that he's also enlisted the help of the trading community in chat rooms and trading site to chip in with their experiences and trading lessons. A nice touch in a book that worked hard for me.
- As well as introducing online trading sites and brokers, there is coverage of some new trading strategies, trading systems, psychology, and money management.
The actual process of choosing an online broker or finding a useful website can be quite an ordeal searching directly on the Internet so this book is a good starting point. I imagine that these sections need to be updated every 2 years or so because they will be prone to rapid change while the Internet is a new medium. Technical analysis is at least introduced but the new trading strategies given are not explained well enough even for experienced technical analysts. They'll certainly be of more harm than good to novices. These strategies seem hurriedly written - they lack detail and charts were incorrectly numbered and sometimes inappropriate. The remainder of the book has little to offer the relatively experienced trader who would need more detail if any at all in the above mentioned topics. However, they are introduced well and are valuable for novice traders. There are lots of insightful passages taken from bulletin boards and interviews with professionals.
- I think alot of these people missed this book; it's about NET trading or using the Net to increase or give you NET gains. It's about building your own trading system and not relying on a canned one or at least knowing why the canned one works the way it does. It's not about surfing the NET for the latest site. .... I had some sour trades & by working with Al & his links I was able to refine some of my methods & see (backtest) why they had gone wrong. Two caveats are in order: Some of the links are either dead or will redirect. Second, if you are not using Metastock for your technical analysis you're gonna wish you were. When I started the book, I was using Worden's TC2000; thanks to Al I went to Metastock & again another improvement. And that's what I think Al is best at; helping you refine and organize your system & feel 'comfortable' with it i.e. refine & tune it so you can stick the bear and not he you. I liked this book so much, that I am going to buy another Al book. And read this one again; I think there are sections that are real gems. Thanks Al. All the best, mate.

3 comments about Stocks Bonds Options Futures: Investments and Their Markets.
- If you're new to the financial world and want to understand the lingo, terrain, and equipment of pure capitalism, this book is for you. Don't let the 1991 publication date fool you. Aside from some out-of-date tax information in a later chapter, this book packs an amazing amount of useful financial clues and explanations. One of the strongest features of this text is its use of examples. Whether it's options, futures, or IPOs, the authors provide number-based scenarios to guide the reader towards understanding. This book will not excite you or show how to make $2 million in the stock market. It will help you understand many of the financial instruments which comprise capitalism.
- For the average newcomer to investing this is an OK book, but it does focus alot on subjects you probably do not need to know unless you plan on working for a brokerage firm. It does give good descriptions and examples of all the security instruments (stocks, bonds, options, futures, etc.) but it accounts for only about 50% of the book. The rest is in my opinion redundant to the lay-person and is in places woefully out of date (especially the taxation section). If updated, I would rate this a 4, but given the age of the text, I would recommend looking elsewhere for an introduction to financial markets.
- Are you getting NASD series 7 registered? For quick references and review this book will make a wonderful addition to your study materials. It's definitely a keeper.

1 comments about Internet Guide to Personal Finance and Investment.
- Since the advent of the web, many of us can now get financial information far more easily and quickly than in the past. So much so that one might need guidance to the best/most reliable websites. Hence Jiao has produced this book.
But this type of book ages quickly. The listing of over 1400 websites with financial data is indeed quite useful. But it can easily grow stale. This type of information is better maintained on a website. By contrast, other portions of the book have slightly greater utility. The classification of the various investment subjects that a reader should be aware of is good. And likewise for the general description of desirable traits in a website. However, when Jiao then assesses the main websites in each subject, that too ages badly.
