4 comments about Step-by-Step Bookkeeping: The Complete Handbook for the Small Business (Revised).
  1. This is was a good one, I also liked organize your books in 6 easy steps, a workbook for the sole proprietor, which is easier to read, but this book gave more explanation to the record keeping process and I am glad I bought it.

It's a great deal for anyone who has to maintain their own books.

  2. Although this book did have some good information to share on the basics i.e. good record keeping practices and procedures. It was geared towards the retail indistry only. I found the book to be quite dated. (early 90s). It took the cash register and paper approach to record keeping as opposed to any mention of computerized systems and methods available. I'm also suspisious of the Federal tax record keeping requirements etc. As this information provided could also be out of date.

  3. This book was written in 1976 and does not appear to have been updated for the 1992 publication. It even states "Mechanical Equipment. In almost any type of business, an adding machine is needed"

The book takes the reader through double-entry book-keeping using a paper-only system for a retail store. If this is what you want then the book is very good, if you do not fit into this catagory then do not bother buying this book!

  4. The bookkeeping steps described are still sound. But it's so old that there is no mention of the tremendous help computer software can be. The examples used feel old-fashioned. And the prose itself feels not just out of the '70s, but even the '50s.

Again, I can't fault the writer on the fundamentals of bookkeeping, but this book is TOUGH going.

3 comments about Small Business Bookkeeping System Simplified (Small Business Made Simple).
  1. SMALL BUSINESS BOOKKEEPING SIMPLIFIED is an accounting system for the small business owner. It is designed to ease the burden of filing taxes by using balance sheets and profit and loss statements which are provided in this easy to use workbook. The balance sheet tracks what the business owes, such as debts, in addition to what the business owns, such as property and other assets. The profit and loss statement is used to keep track of money received as well as money paid out.

With detailed instructions for filling out the weekly expense and income record forms, employee payroll records, and other annual reports, this workbook is a must have for any small business. Though it is simply a workbook, small businesses could use this in place of creating their own documents for maintaining information necessary to run their business and also to prepare taxes.

  2. This document (it is not a book) contains 4 pages of bullet point information regarding how to track receipts and disbursements, but in no other way provides information as to the hows and whys of bookkeeping.

The remaining 124 pages of the document are blank forms to be filled out.

The publisher should consider offering this document as a PDF for a per-fee download, and allow buyers to print their own blank forms as necessary.

  3. This book only has a few business forms. Considering its low cost, it's not a bad book overall. I thought it would teach me how to do bookkeeping, but it basically just gives you a few business forms. I would not pay more than five dollars for it. The word "simplified" in the book's title is really what the book is all about entirely.

  1. I bought this and two other books on the same subject. This is the one I read first. It covers 9 different aspects of the subject so you only have to read the chapters that are applicable to your situation. Very readable. A good place to start.

5 comments about I have QuickBooks, Now What?.
  1. "I have QuickBooks, Now What" recently went through a name change. This informative book was formely named Computerized Bookkeeping in Laymen's Terms and was written with my clients questions and needs in mind. We changed the name to better fit the consumer who is buying QuickBooks and is asking, Now What? It was written for the blue collar workers throughout the US who are not Harvard Graduates, but Self-Trained Entrepreneurs and tradesman who don't speak proper english. This book is the only Laymen's Term guide for the other 70% of the US Small Business population to finally figure out. It answers those questions asked to me hundreds of times. "If my business has QuickBooks and I use the instruction manual that comes with the program, WHAT do I set up my books with? What paperwork do I need, what are the Chart of Accounts, and what am I forgetting?" Every QuickBooks instruction book has templates, how to set up accounts, how to bill customers, etc. What they don't have is Why, With What, and How do you read a financial report and what does it mean? What do I do to keep on top of my bookkeeping so my Accountant doesn't charge me a fortune at the end of the year? It is a wonderful tool that helps the small business owner answer the questions in a language that they speak .

  2. I received both of your books late yesterday and have spent an hour or so for a quick overview. I have over 20 years of accounting and small business management experience and recently received my CMA designation.
I am planning to open my accounting and small business consulting firm by the end of this year. I will not have problems advising clients on higher-end accounting and on business strategy, however, I was having problems how to provide bookkeeping and software support services and how to market my new business.
Your books have all if not most of the answers for a real life situation. It will save me countless hours on research. This weekend I will read both of your books in detail and incorporate most of your ideas in my business plan.

Thank you for promptly sending the two books.

  3. Book number 2 of Julie's I read in preparation for opening a home-based accounting/bookkeeping business. 300+ pages of very practical information you need to set-up Quickbooks for your business. Spiral format makes it easier to use than typical bound books. Enough information to make it useful, but not too much to overwhelm you. If you spend $200-$300 on Quickbooks spend an extra $50 to get this book.

  4. I have QuickBooks, Now What? I'll tell you what, don't buy this book. I understand that this book is written for self-employed, small business owners who know next to nothing about bookkeeping, but it's way too dumbed down. I am a small business owner who knows nothing about bookkeeping; that's why I bought the book. But I didn't get anything useful out of it. It's literally written for people with an 8th grade education. I learned next to nothing from the book. As a business owner, I want to know why things need to be done a certain way. This book just gives you the simplest case examples with no explanation, but plenty of useless fluff. So I couldn't figure out what to do in my particular situation. And every business owner is going to have a unique situation. Find a better book that has some more detail and can give you some insight. If you want to learn about bookkeeping and why things are done the way they are, don't buy this book.

  5. This book is a must have for anyone starting a business. The book walks you through the setup process for setting up a business using Quickbooks. The book will give invaluable information that only someone who has been in the bookkeeping business and experienced it can give you. The book offers insight into things to look out for and how to troubleshoot problems that only an experienced professional bookkeeper can offer.

I just started a bookkeeping business so it was nice to find a book that teaches you what a professional is thinking when setting up a new business or taking over the bookkeeping for an existing business.

I would recommend the book to business owners that want to do their own bookkeeping and to anyone starting a bookkeeping business.
