2 comments about Book-Keeping & Accounting for Small Business, 7th edition.
- It's hard to believe the classic Book-Keeping & Accounting For The Small Business: How To Keep The Books And Maintain Financial Control Over Your Business is now in its 7th revised, updated edition: its new incarnation and updated details will continue to appeal to modern readers, whether they be sole proprietors, partners, or limited corporations. Because this is written in the UK, some issues, such as VAT taxes, may not apply outside; but the basics of understanding wages, taxes, accounts, and double entry book-keeping are essential to any small business.
- I didn't realize it when I bought it that it was British, completely my fault. Even so it was helpful to me, although some of it was completely useless for my needs and of course it didn't touch on some of the things I needed info on. But the basics are pretty much the same.

1 comments about Secrets to Millionaire Success: Expert Solutions to Grow Your Personal Wealth (Audio Success).
- Secrets To Millionaire Success: Expert Solutions To Grow Your Personal Wealth. The title and the packaging caught my eye and then I read the description. Eleven experts were sharing their expertise on 14 audio CD's and 1 DVD.
I immediately started walking toward the checkout and getting out my money. To me, this set sounded like hope in a box. Did it live up to my expectations?
First of all let me say, I am a big believer that if you garner one new idea, "aha" or concept from a book, CD or DVD, it's worth your time, energy and money.
The box description promises "hours of inspiration and practical steps to power-up your life." I liked the fact that the speakers were giving me pro-active solutions for taking better control of my life and my money. The combination of subjects and speakers were a good mix of old school, new school and real world advice.
Here are my favorites:
CD 1: Finding Financial Freedom to Ensure a Fantastic Finish - Chris Widener -I'd never listened to this author before so I was starting from scratch. It was good sound financial advice.
CD 2: Millionaire Secrets - Loral Langemeier - I've heard Loral speak in person and I had high expectations for this CD. I wasn't disappointed. It's motivational and practical all at the same time. Loral shares techniques for becoming the moneymaker and millionaire you are meant to become. This one ranks right up there with my favorites. I took away several ideas.
CD 5-7: The Richest Man in Babylon: Dr. Denis Waitley - Well worth the price of the entire set! Dr Waitley presents this classic book with his personal style and interpretation. He shares the success secrets of the ancients as only he can. It's three CD's of note taking and totally absorbed listening. This is why Denis Waitley is one of the "father's" of the modern self-development movement.
CD 8-9: The 12 Secrets of Self-Made Multi-Millionaires: Dr Denis Waitley - More Denis Waitley! He has a captivating and unique way of combining the philosophical and the practical. His voice is easy to listen to and his message is timeless.
CD 11: Twenty-One Qualities of Self-Made Millionaires: Brian Tracy - Here is another "father" of the modern self-development movement. I've been a Brian Tracy fan for years. He doesn't disappoint. In his simple, real world and practical way Brian Tracy gives you the step-by-step formula for becoming a millionaire.
CD 12: Thin and Wealthy: Donna Krech - I didn't know what to expect from this CD. It isn't about diets and exercise; it's about taking care of yourself and increasing your wealth. I enjoyed it.
CD 14: Share The Wealth: Bob Proctor - WOW! I was blown away. I've heard Bob "live" several times and each time I'm mesmerized. His information is right-on the mark. This CD is about the Universal Law of Circulation. It's a great listen.
DVD 15: From Success to Significance: Dr. Sheila Murray Bethel - After I kept putting this in my CD player and nothing happened, I finally figured out this was the DVD. It was well worth watching. This final lesson is more personal than wealth building but a powerful lesson on which to end the series.
Obviously some I liked better than others. It's all a matter of personal taste. The information was useful in all of them so all in all, it's well worth the money.
This is not an inexpensive set of experts to buy, but you're getting "experts!" I came away with several new ideas for changing my life and attitude for the positive. I recommend this set if you're serious about personal and financial development. Where else are you going to get all of this knowledge in one place?
It's well worth every dollar if you can make many more dollars with just one new idea, "aha," or concept. And, it comes with its own carrying case to store all your discs.

3 comments about Accounting Handbook (Barron's Accounting Handbook).
- The Accounting Handbook was very helpfull during my time in college accounting courses. It has since be a very helpfull desk reference in my practice. One can't go wrong with the price of this very handy volume. There are chapters on various topics ranging from basic accounting to value added accounting. There is also a very handy glossary/dictionary of hundreds of accounting and IT terms.
- I was very unhappy with this accounting textbook. With almost 500 pages devoted to defining accounting terminology out of a 1,000 page book, Siegel/Schim should have titled it "An Accounting Dictionary with some shallow chapters on Accounting." The remaining 500 pages gave only a shallow review of accounting procedures. Space dedicated to business accounting is lost because there is a chapter on doing personal tax returns and one on personal financial planning. This personal aspect doesn't belong since the book's title, "Accounting Handbook" implies business accounting. Now if the authors are trying to connect a business owner's decisionmaking with his personal planning, than why were there no chapters on partnership and corporate tax planning or income tax preparation? The chapter on non-profits was a terribly short 15 pages long. There is no discussion of G/L, AP, AR or other mundane, but required basics of accounting.
- I just purchased this book and I am so impressed! I am a college student majoring in Accouting. Sometimes my textbooks do not adequately cover certain topics or we are expected to know more than what is in our text. This is not only a fabulous dictionary of Accounting terms, but it is a fabulous reference for looking up any formulas. It also acts as a study guide and additional reference to help in most Accounting classes. Also various levels of Accounting classes. (Financial, Managerial, Etc.) It already has helped me tremendously in my work for this week. I am so glad I bought it! I highly reccommend it!!!

5 comments about Financial Accounting: A Mercifully Brief Introduction.
- This is a great book for small businesses. I've started recommending it to my clients who are doing their own bookkeeping (and all you professionals know what a nightmare that is!) and to bookkeepers who find themselves doing balance sheet accounting without a good background in the real story of debits and credits. This book covers the basics in an accessible, jargon-less prose yet still covers the essential points. I'm suggesting that this be a reference book my clients keep in their offices. That way they have a quick reference guide for themselves or their employees. Hopefully, when they go through 3 bookkeepers in a year the learning curve will be less steep than usual for the new employees, and I'll get fewer "just a quick question" phone calls during tax season.
- For the person who has no knowledge of accounting and wants to understand the very basics this book is indeed a good brief introduction. The author makes a good point of the fact that most introductory accounting texts spend a great deal of time covering the basics of transaction entry. In today's marketplace the software packages take care of these details of ensuring double entry occurs and the entries balance. When that information is removed you end up with the very basics of accounting including the basic accounting equation, cash and accrual accounting, receivables and payables, fixed assets, inventory, and financial statements. Explained at a level that a reader with no previous knowledge of accounting can follow the author does provide a mercifully brief introduction that is only the basics needed for everyday work.
- THIS BOOKS HELPS TO BRUSH UP YOUR BASIC ACCOUNTING 101. BUT NEEDS MORE EXAMPLES TO MAKE THE READER COMPREHEND. OVERALL NOT BAD.
- This book is an informative and well-written primer on a range of important concepts necessary to "get a handle on" the financial basics that small business owners and allied professionals frequently confront.
The author successfully employs humor in developing scenarios, examples and explanations which remain in the reader's mind and make these often times abstruse subjects understandable.
The Summaries, Exercises and Problems sections of the book are particularly effective teaching tools. I found the most interesting and useful chapters to be Chapter One (Introduction: Difficult Measurement Problems), Chapter 7 (Fixed Assets and Depreciation Methods) and particularly Chapter 10 (Financial Statement Reliability) for its treatment of embezzlement prevention and related issues.
I have practiced law for almost 33 years and have represented many small businesses during that time. I am pleased to have encountered this book, which I will highly recommend as a very helpful tool for business owners and others in understanding, approaching and evaluating accounting issues.

- This book is a great crash course in beginning accounting. I recommend it to anyone that needs a head start in understanding accounting principles.

- This book is filled with sound pratical financial advice!!
I was a little dissapointed that some of the sections were a little to broad. There is so many topics covered that I am sure that it was hard to put in all the information that they wanted to. My second complaint is that it is not christian enough. There are not as many references to the bible of wanted. Larry burkett has another book, How to manage your money that is more along that line. Overall, this is a solid book, and provided me with lots of great info ranging from budgeting, buying a car, investing, retiring, and more.

- Burkett takes a humorous approach to finances that makes total sense. I have even caught myself laughing out loud at many of his poignant remarks. Anybody that has more than $100 should read through this book to avoid some of the financial pit-falls that so many of us fall into. If you have already fallen into a pit, this book is full of great advice for getting out . I wish I had found this book about 10 years ago.

3 comments about Bookkeepers' Boot Camp: Get a Grip on Accounting Basics.
- This book really helped me set up my books properly. I had really made a mess of them up until now. It also teaches me the lingo of accounting so I don't feel like such an idiot talking to my accountant!
- If you want to run your business instead of your business running you - THIS IS A MUST READ!!!
This book will really keep you on top of your dollars and truly understand how to set up & keep your books. Can't wait for the rest of the series to come out !!!!!
- As a complete novice to accounting concepts I bought this book because I wanted to understand what type of information I need to track as a freelance professional services provider. I read all of Part 1 (several chapters) and can't say I know more than I did when I started. If you want to understand the difference between cash & accrual methods, the reason for single or double entry, the purpose of income statements, or how bookkeeping can help you as a management tool, look around at some other books before buying this sight unseen.

5 comments about Bookkeeping & Tax Preparation: Start & Build a Prosperous Bookkeeping, Tax, & Financial Services Business.
- This book not only gives practical advice on how to start and run a business, but more importantly includes the ethical basis for decision-making. I wish more professionals understood the value and long-term advantage of honesty, compassion and competency. This book reads easily and impacts longterm.
- This is an excellent book for anyone looking "to take the plunge" and establish their own tax and bookkeeping practice. The author gives great advice that is difficult to obtain from other established professionals. Mr. Lewis writes candidly on points such as how to fairly deal with problem clients and which clients to look for. There are also a couple good chapters about market research and the most practical ways to promote your tax business. Although technology has changed quite a bit since the book was written, you get a slight idea of the tools required of the profession. All in all an excellent book. Although most underlying principals haven't changed, I would love to see a second edition that discusses recent technology advances.
They do not cover most of this material in a university accounting class and this book should be a prerequisite for those looking to enter the profession. This book is a must read for the beginner and a nice reference for those of us whose practices are still in its infancy.
Highly recommended!! Well done Gordon!!
- After reading the reviews for this book, I was anxious to start reading it right away. Unfortunately,I returned the book the same day I received it. I am in the process of starting a bookkeeping business out of my home and Mr. Lewis's book did not help at all. As I skimmed the book I quickly realized that he prefers tax accounting and a commercial office environment. If you are looking for an overview for setting up shop as a tax accountant, with employees, in an office this book will be perfect.
If you want particulars on starting a home based bookkeeping business keep looking.
- I read this book but the author goes heavily into tax accounting rather than bookkeeping services. If you hate working with taxes and want to learning about starting a home based bookkeepping service for clients, and let their tax accountant do the taxes, don't buy this book. It's not helpful.
- This book was somewhat useful, but emphasized taxes and a larger business (with office space) too much. It also seems dated.
